TASTING NOTES
Cafaggio's Basilica Solatìo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020 is a pure Sangiovese of great elegance, born in the heart of the prestigious Conca d’Oro of Panzano in Chianti, one of the most vocated areas of the entire Chianti Classico. The 2020 vintage in Chianti Classico is considered excellent: a mild winter, rainy spring, and warm but not extreme summer, with excellent diurnal shifts, allowed harvesting healthy, concentrated, perfectly ripe grapes. The 2020 wines stand out for intense colour, well-present acidity, balance between structure and freshness, and notable ageing potential, earning five-star vintage ratings in the denomination. Tenuta Basilica Cafaggio lies in the Conca d’Oro, a natural amphitheatre with optimal exposures, hillside altitudes, and clay and galestro soils that gift Sangiovese elegance, aromatic depth, and an unmistakable mineral vein. The microclimate of sunny days, cool nights, and constant ventilation favours slow, complete ripenings, with fine tannins and clean aromas, ideal for a great Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The Basilica Solatìo vineyard represents one of Cafaggio's ultimate Sangiovese expressions, farmed organically and selected to produce only the finest grapes destined for Gran Selezione. Here, Sangiovese expresses a refined character: crunchy red fruit, violet, balsamic notes, and a clear mineral imprint evoking the typical galestro and clays of the Conca d’Oro. On the eye, Basilica Solatìo 2020 shows intense, brilliant ruby red, presaging body and concentration. On the nose, it's fine and complex, with scents of cherry and raspberry, violet, sweet spices, subtle tobacco, and a mineral touch adding depth. On the palate, the sip is full and harmonious, with tight yet silky tannins, great freshness, important length, and returns of red fruit and spices, making it suited to long bottle ageing. At table, Basilica Solatìo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2020 pairs perfectly with bistecca alla fiorentina, game, braises, peposo, roasts, and aged cheeses—ideal for those seeking a territorial Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG that's important yet elegant, to present as a great Sangiovese from Panzano in Chianti.
