TASTING NOTES
Maranges Vieilles Vignes 2024 from Domaine Bachey-Legros is an intense, fruity red from the Côte de Beaune, Pinot Noir from centenarian vines planted in 1945, offering deep concentration, silky tannins, and a wild character perfect for rustic pairings or ageing up to 8-10 years. The 2024 vintage in Côte de Beaune was warm and sunny with concentrated yields, favouring mature, balanced Pinot Noir; this old-vines Maranges shows explosive black fruit and soft tannins with no specific ratings published yet, but promises excellent potential from late grape ripening. Maranges AOP, the southernmost of Côte de Beaune (Saône-et-Loire), borders Santenay and spans 170 hectares of clay-limestone soils rich in gravel and limestone on south-east facing hills that impart solid structure and earthy minerality; the domaine's "Les Aubuzes" and "En Crevèche" vines mix damp clay and ancient clones for fruity freshness. Pure Pinot Noir from vines over 80 years old, with 5 days cold maceration, 8 days alcoholic fermentation, and 5 days post-maceration, followed by 14 months élevage (12 in barrique 20% new on lees, 2 in vat); 13.5% abv, medium-full body served at 14-16°C with game, red meats, or aged cheeses. On the eye, deep ruby with garnet hues, dense and lively. On the nose, ripe Burlat cherries, wild blackberries, spices, earth, and garrigue. On the palate, enveloping sweetness of black fruits, velvety, fine tannins, and fresh persistent finish. Domaine Bachey-Legros (18 ha in Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Maranges) is led by cousins Lénaïc Bachey and Samuel Legros, heirs to a tradition since 1935 with sustainable ethos and respect for old vines; noted for powerful yet fine reds bordering Premier Cru, they produce wines reflecting the "wild" Côte de Beaune terroir.
