TASTING NOTES
Saint-Véran Roche Mer 2024 from Domaine Gilles Morat is an elegant, mineral white from the heart of the Mâconnais in Burgundy, produced from organic Chardonnay vineyards at the foot of the iconic limestone crests of Vergisson, ideal for those seeking a fresh, structured, and age-worthy wine. This 2024 vintage benefits from a balanced climate in the Mâconnais, with grapes hand-harvested and masterfully fermented, revealing vibrant mineral tension and a citrus-driven saline finish; no specific ratings have emerged yet, but the domaine confirms ageing potential up to 10 years. The Saint-Véran AOP lies in southern Burgundy, between the famed rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, on clay-limestone soils rich in marine fossils (hence "Roche Mer", rock of the sea), imparting unique minerality and pure energy; Domaine Morat farms 6.5-7.5 hectares organic since 2001 in this picturesque, protected, and breezy setting. Chardonnay from the Les Châtaigniers and La Rapie parcels, east-facing, undergoes alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, ageing 10 months on lees with bâtonnage for a fleshy, harmonious body (13.5% abv), served at 11-13°C with fish, white meats, cheeses, or creamy dishes. On the eye, it shows bright straw yellow with green hues, crystalline and inviting. On the nose, delicate notes of lemon, sun-dried hay, stone fruit, and floral hints. On the palate, frank and lively attack, with spicy roundness, citrus freshness, and a saline-mineral close. Founded in 1997 by Gilles and Joëlle Morat in Vergisson, the domaine passed to son Pierre (winemaker) in 2020, upholding an artisanal organic approach on Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran; praised by various international guides, it stands as a bastion of energetic, age-worthy wines from southern Burgundy.
