TASTING NOTES
Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru Sur la Roche 2022 from Domaine Gilles Morat is an elite white from the Mâconnais in Burgundy, organic Chardonnay from the steep slopes of the Sur la Roche cru at Vergisson, blending potent minerality, ripe fruit, and longevity up to 12 years. The 2022 vintage in the Mâconnais enjoyed a warm summer managed with reduced yields, producing concentrated grapes with balanced acids and optimal phenolic ripeness; this Premier Cru earned strong ratings including 92 points from Botti.no (especially recommended), 89 from DN/Smak, and 89 from Apéritif.no, confirming excellent evolution. The Premier Cru Sur la Roche lies on steep limestone slopes at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson (300-400m asl), on poor clay-limestone soils with marine fossils that impart rocky sapidity and unique vertical tension; part of the Pouilly-Fuissé AOP since 1940, this cru highlights pure minerality thanks to south-east exposures and natural ventilation. Pure Chardonnay from old vines (over 40 years) in the Sur la Roche cru, fermented in barrique (20% new) with full malolactic and bâtonnage for 10-12 months on lees, offers 13.5% abv, full body, and structure to pair with lobster, noble poultry, or blue cheeses, served at 12-14°C. On the eye, intense golden yellow with green reflections, bright and dense. On the nose, complex aromas of confit lemon, toasted hazelnuts, ripe pears, and warm flint. On the palate, rich and oily attack, with fine spices, crisp yellow fruit, saline acidity, and a very long mineral finish. Gilles Morat, former electronics engineer, took over the family domaine in 1997 converting to organic in 2001 (6.7 ha total), handing reins to son Pierre (winemaker) in 2020; celebrated by international guides, it is known for premium barrels and "taut" wines against global warming.
