TASTING NOTES
Notturno in Fa Maggiore 2023 from Drei Donà is a Romagna DOC Sangiovese Predappio that captures the authentic soul of the hills between Forlì and Predappio, at the historic Tenuta La Palazza, now farmed organically. This is the Drei Donà family's classic Sangiovese, serving as ambassador for the Predappio subzone and the first wine of the new era spearheaded by Claudio Drei Donà—its label inspired by the story of their horse Notturno. In the glass, Notturno in Fa Maggiore glows with an intense, brilliant ruby red, showing good concentration yet remarkable luminosity. On the nose, it channels the signature Predappio Sangiovese profile: cherry and morello cherry alongside smaller red berries, hints of violet and red flowers, Mediterranean herbs, fine spices like pepper and liquorice, and a balsamic freshness that adds real depth. On the palate, it's dry, fresh, and harmonious, with present yet well-integrated tannins, a medium-to-full body, excellent drinkability, and a long, juicy, sapid finish where those fruity and spicy echoes return with poise. The Sangiovese grapes come from La Palazza's diverse vineyard plots, hand-harvested, vinified, and aged separately before blending into a cuvée that best embodies Predappio's clay-limestone soils and sharp diurnal temperature swings. Vinification emphasises purity and elegance: stainless steel fermentation with traditional macerations, followed by wood ageing (large casks and/or barriques depending on vintage) and bottle rest, yielding a wine that's immensely approachable yet layered with balance. The 2023 Romagna vintage proved very strong for Sangiovese—intense and mature, yet lifted by solid acidity—and Notturno in Fa Maggiore 2023 fits right in, already enjoyable now with room to evolve over several years in bottle. It shines with ragù-topped primi, fresh filled pastas, red meats, grills, light game, and medium-aged cheeses, making it the ideal Predappio Sangiovese: rooted in terroir, family heritage, and versatile at table.
