Nota di Cantina N°.02/20 “Madonna del Pruno” Sangiovese in Amphora 2020 is an organic Predappio DOC Riserva from Drei Donà, a micro–vinification experiment born from a selection of Sangiovese grapes from Vigna del Pruno, vinified and aged almost entirely in terracotta amphora. It is a characterful red, produced in tiny quantities, that marries the depth of Predappio’s historic cru with a raw, pure, highly tactile reading of Sangiovese. In the glass, the wine shows an intense ruby red with garnet hues, good concentration and a slight haze, typical of artisanal, unfiltered vinifications. On the nose it is complex and three–dimensional: ripe red fruits (morello cherry, redcurrant), hints of plum, aromatic herbs, dried flowers, sanguine and ferrous–mineral nuances, with earthy and clay tones that clearly echo its time in amphora. On the palate it is dry and vibrant, with present yet fine tannins, marked freshness, a strong saline streak and a long, juicy, slightly salty finish that highlights the most authentic, terroir–driven side of Predappio Sangiovese. ​ This Nota di Cantina comes from a tiny yield of just 1,673 kg of grapes, hand–harvested on 19 September 2020, with spontaneous fermentation in terracotta amphora, malolactic in amphora and around 18 months’ ageing split between amphora (about 80% of the wine) and a single French oak barrique, followed by extended bottle rest; total production is only 1,273 bottles. The vines grow on medium–textured clay–silt soils with a significant sandy component and a limestone vein at 1.5 metres’ depth, elements that contribute to the wine’s pronounced verticality and marked sapidity. ​ Madonna del Pruno Sangiovese in Amphora 2020 is perfect for lovers of natural wines and stripped–back expressions of Sangiovese. It pairs beautifully with refined peasant–style cooking, white and red meats without overly rich sauces, braised dishes, light game and medium–aged cheeses, and it also works wonderfully as a contemplative tasting wine for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
