TASTING NOTES
Roberto Garbarino's Metodo Classico Extra Brut La Sorgente 2020 Alta Langa DOCG Magnum Astucciato is a refined and vibrant monovarietal sparkling wine from Piedmont, in a 1.5-litre magnum format with an elegant case, ideal for celebrating special occasions with finesse and persistence. The 2020 vintage, with an early harvest on 17 August for the Pinot Noir, produced healthy grapes thanks to a cool climate that enhanced acidity and structure, with lees ageing of 30 to 40 months for unique complexity. In Alta Langa, 2020 was a cool and balanced vintage, with Pinot Noir clusters picked early to preserve freshness and primary aromas. No specific scores are available for this cuvée, but the long lees ageing delivers a dry, age-worthy Extra Brut, perfect for drinking now or within 5-7 years. La Sorgente's vines are located at 480-500 metres a.s.l. on the Langa hills, with east or south-west exposure and calcareous-marly soils veined with sand, which impart elegant minerality and fine bubbles thanks to marked diurnal temperature swings. Limited yields of 50 hl/ha and an average vine age of 15 years emphasise concentration and the purity of the Piedmontese terroir. 100% Pinot Noir, here vinified as a Blanc de Noirs, expresses the variety's typical structure with subtle pink hues, fruity and spicy aromas, and a creamy mousse. Gentle pressing and fermentation at 14°C in stainless steel preserve varietal character, avoiding oxidations and creating a sapid, harmonious Extra Brut with a decisive yet fine personality. It appears as pale straw yellow with golden reflections, fine and persistent perlage. On the nose, it shows great complexity, with rennet apple, dog rose, honey, and a bread crust finish. In the mouth, it is consistent and structured, with lively acidity, balanced creaminess, and long persistence on mineral notes. Roberto Garbarino runs this family winery in Alta Langa alongside Beatrice, dedicated to sustainable metodo classico with hand selection and periodic riddling. The name "La Sorgente" derives from the Tinella stream spring beneath a vineyard in Trezzo Tinella, symbolising the indissoluble bond between territory and wine.
