Campo alla Giostra 2023 Donna Olimpia 1898 Bolgheri DOC is a wine that embodies the elegance and power of Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the Bolgheri area, one of Tuscany's most renowned terroirs. The 2023 vintage in Bolgheri was marked by a rainy spring that strengthened the vines' roots, followed by a warm summer tempered by cool nights and ideal diurnal temperature swings. The harvest took place at the end of September, at full phenolic ripeness, with moderate yields that produced concentrated grapes brimming with fruity aromas and excellent balance between sugars and acidity. The sandy-clay soil of Campo alla Giostra, combined with the microclimate influenced by the Tyrrhenian Sea, drains perfectly and reflects the sun, imparting that signature salty minerality of Bolgheri DOC. The Donna Olimpia 1898 winery, founded by the Folonari family with roots in the noble tradition of the Conti della Gherardesca, has been cultivating organic vineyards since 2001. Fun fact: the name “Campo alla Giostra” celebrates a historic training field for horses and pays homage to Varenne, the legendary trotter born in the estate's stables. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it ferments in stainless steel with a 20-day maceration and ages for 18 months in French oak barriques, enhancing its structure and longevity for 10-15 years. At sight, it presents an intense, vivid ruby red enriched by violet hues that highlight its freshness and youth. On the nose, it opens broad and complex: blackberry and blackcurrant notes, hints of ripe green pepper, cocoa, liquorice, spices, and balsamic tones. On the palate, it is full and harmonious, structured with silky tannins and sapidity, balanced warmth, and a long finish of red fruit jam and spices. Ideal with Tuscan roasts, game, or aged cheeses.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The name Campo alla Giostra "dei cavalli" is in honor of the 20th general of Varenne, born in 1995, who was raised by Dubois in the stables of the Estate.
