TASTING NOTES
The Pinot Noir Réserve 2023 Vin d'Alsace AOC from Gustave Lorentz is an elegant red that embodies the excellence of Alsatian tradition, produced by a historic family winery now in its sixth generation. Grown on 33 hectares of hills around Bergheim, primarily in the Altemberg de Bergheim – a proprietary Grand Cru with clay-limestone soils and south-facing exposure – this wine draws its minerality and freshness from Alsace's unique terroir, a cool, sunny region ideal for aromatic varieties like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir, here at 100%, is a rare variety in Alsace where it dominates in light, fruity reds, thanks to the continental climate that enhances its delicacy without excessive tannins. The 2023 vintage, marked by a warm summer balanced by autumn rains, yielded healthy grapes hand-harvested, with a 10-day maceration, stainless steel fermentations, and around two years' ageing, imparting fresh structure and longevity up to five years. In the glass, it shows a clear ruby red colour with bright highlights, inviting and luminous. On the nose, it reveals a fruity bouquet of raspberry, fleshy cherry, strawberry, and redcurrant, with typical earthy nuances of Alsatian Pinot. On the palate, it opens with silky fruitiness, well-integrated tannins, persistent freshness, and mineral balance that makes it versatile and food-friendly. Gustave Lorentz, active for 250 years, modernised the winery in 2015 with cutting-edge technology while maintaining biodynamic practices; a fun fact is that it owns 40% of the Altemberg Grand Cru, producing wines awarded for their elegance. Perfect with light red meats, summer barbecues, or semi-aged cheeses, this Pinot Noir Réserve 2023 is a must for lovers of fresh Alsatian reds..
