TASTING NOTES
Poggio Antico's Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2024 is a pure Sangiovese, produced in one of the highest and most favoured sites in Montalcino, where it best expresses the freshness and elegance of a warm yet balanced vintage. The 2024 growing season in Montalcino featured a rainy spring followed by a hot, breezy summer, with hand-harvesting from late September to early October, yielding healthy grapes that ripened harmoniously. This has resulted in a juicy, fruit-forward Rosso di Montalcino with pronounced acidity, excellent drinkability, and the potential to evolve gracefully in the coming years without sacrificing its immediate appeal. Poggio Antico sits on Montalcino's highest hills, between 480 and 520 metres above sea level, on deep clay soils farmed under certified organic regime. The altitude and constant winds produce fresh, elegant wines that honour Tuscan tradition while embracing a modern touch through sustainable practices like soil mapping and new plantings such as I Poggi. Montalcino Sangiovese, used at 100% for this Rosso, is renowned for its vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and aromas of small red berries—qualities amplified here by the elevation, which preserves freshness and crunch. A versatile grape grown across 37 hectares mostly dedicated to it, it yields age-worthy, terroir-driven wines with enough structure to make this an accessible 'insider tip' for Brunello lovers. It shows a bright ruby red with lively highlights, signalling youth and vitality. The nose bursts with intense cherry, morello, and crunchy small red berries, layered with floral notes, Mediterranean herbs, maquis, and sweet spices, forming a dense, rocky bouquet. In the mouth, it's harmonious and dynamic—juicy on entry with well-integrated tannins, persistent sapidity, and a fruity return that tempts you to uncork another bottle. Poggio Antico began its conversion to organics around 2017, investing in soil zoning and new facilities while preserving the elegant style of Montalcino Sangiovese. The 37-hectare certified organic estate crafts wines true to the high terroir of Montalcino.
