TASTING NOTES
Abbotts & Delaunay Languedoc Rouge 2023 is a juicy, structured red from the AOP Languedoc, ideal for those seeking an outstanding value wine from southern France. Born from a warm yet breezy vintage, it delivers balanced ripeness and elegant tannins. The Languedoc appellation unfolds between Montpellier and Nîmes across Mediterranean hillsides, with gravelly, calcareous, and clay soils imparting structure and mineral freshness, tempered by sea breezes and coastal winds that soften the fierce sun. Handpicked vineyards around Magrie and similar sites provide a versatile terroir for dynamic blends, perfect for fruity reds laced with spice. This classic blend marries Grenache (50-60%) and Syrah (40-50%), where Grenache offers ripe red fruit and roundness, while Syrah weaves in black pepper, spices, and aromatic tension. The 2023 vintage, fermented in steel with partial barrel ageing for 6-9 months, promises harmonious evolution and 3-5 years' ageing potential—Decanter hails its mature poise without excess. It pours an intense, luminous ruby with vibrant violet rim. The nose unfolds with mature blackberry, raspberry, and plum, evolving into black pepper, dried herbs, and touches of rubber and toasted hay. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with velvety tannins and balanced acidity, echoing grilled meat aromas, finishing persistently spicy and fruity—brilliant with red meats or cheeses. Abbotts & Delaunay, sparked by Australian Nerida Abbott and Frenchman Laurent (or talented Jeanne Delaunay in recent years), fuses Burgundian precision with Languedoc craftsmanship.
