TASTING NOTES
Edouard Delaunay's Septembre Chardonnay 2023 is a fresh and refined white from Burgundy, produced from selected Chardonnay grapes in the Côte d'Or by a historic house founded in 1893 and revitalised in 2017 by Laurent Delaunay, the fifth-generation winemaker, who enhances top terroirs through precise winemaking attuned to nature. The 2023 vintage, marked by favourable weather with mild summers and balanced harvests, has yielded wines of great aromatic purity and vibrant acidity, matured partly in steel to preserve freshness and in small barrels for complexity. The Côte d'Or, Burgundy's heart between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune, offers clay-limestone soils perfect for Chardonnay, with south-facing slopes capturing the sun and cool nights for elegant ripeness, making this Septembre an accessible example of Burgundian finesse. Burgundian Chardonnay is versatile and noble, here a pure expression of minerality and white fruit with typical regional floral notes from the clone; vigorous yet terroir-sensitive, it produces age-worthy, harmonious whites suited to cool climates for crisp acids and complex aromas. In the glass, it appears bright straw yellow with greenish highlights and fine bubbles. On the nose, it bursts with ripe pear, Golden Delicious apple, white flowers, citrus, and flinty mineral touches, alongside brioche hints from the oak. On the palate, it is balanced, creamy, and persistent, with fresh acidity, light tannins, and a sapid finish of almond and lemon. Edouard Delaunay was among the first to export Burgundy worldwide in the 1920s, supplying the Orient Express and the Élysée; Laurent revived the house after 25 years of obscurity, with talented winemaker Christophe Briotet, focusing on "atypical" wines for their subtlety. Ideal with crustaceans, poultry, or fresh goat's cheese, a perfect match for Septembre Edouard Delaunay Burgundy Chardonnay 2023.
